Mumbai residents face rising costs for CNG and local transport

Residents of Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are facing multiple price increases effective September 1. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has raised the price of CNG by ₹2 per kg, bringing the cost to ₹88 per kg. Domestic PNG prices have also increased by ₹1 per SCM. MGL attributed these hikes to rising international gas prices and increased reliance on expensive imported spot RLNG due to tensions in West Asia.

Simultaneously, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has approved a fare hike for auto-rickshaws and black-and-yellow taxis. The minimum fare for auto-rickshaws has risen from ₹26 to ₹27 for the first 1.5 km, with the per-kilometer rate increasing from ₹17.14 to ₹18.22. For taxis, the minimum fare has increased from ₹31 to ₹33, and the per-kilometer rate has risen from ₹20.66 to ₹21.90. Drivers have until late November 2026 to recalibrate their electronic meters to reflect these new rates.

Additional inflationary pressures include a rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and a ₹9 per liter increase in wholesale milk prices.
