Mumbai implements AI cameras to combat littering
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched an initiative using artificial intelligence technology to address garbage dumping in Mumbai. The project involves installing smart cameras at Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) to detect individuals attempting to litter.
When the AI system identifies someone dumping waste, it triggers an immediate audio announcement through a loudspeaker to urge the individual to keep the surroundings clean. The technology has been deployed in the G/North ward, specifically at Gajanan Vatika on Dr Raykar Marg in Mahim.
Following this initial implementation, the BMC announced plans to expand the deployment of these AI-enabled cameras to other locations throughout the city to improve urban cleanliness and promote responsible behavior.
