Mumbai local trains to receive 238 new AC rakes by 2030

The Indian government has announced a major upgrade to Mumbai’s suburban railway network, including the fast-tracked production of 238 new air-conditioned (AC) local train rakes. To expedite delivery, the Ministry of Railways will utilize three domestic production units: the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, and the Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Rae Bareli.

By shifting from a technology-partner procurement model to simultaneous manufacturing within these units, the government aims to deliver the first AC rake by 2027. This is significantly ahead of the previous estimate, which projected the first rake would arrive in 2030 and the full fleet by 2034. The goal is to complete the entire delivery of 238 rakes by 2030.

In addition to the new rolling stock, approximately ₹22,000 crore is being invested in capacity expansion projects. These include the development of new corridors, additional rail lines, yard remodeling, and the extension of platforms to accommodate 15-coach trains. These measures are intended to reduce overcrowding and improve the safety and comfort of the commuter network, which serves as the city’s lifeline.
