Maharashtra ATS arrests suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed associate in Mumbai

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested 33-year-old Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar in the Mahim area of Mumbai. The arrest was conducted by the ATS Kalachowki unit near the Mahim Metro station following a tip-off.

Investigators allege that Akhtar had links to the banned terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). He reportedly used his employment as a Rapido rider and a perfume seller as cover to propagate radical ideologies and incite communal tension through social media platforms.

Authorities recovered inflammatory content from his mobile phone, including audio clips of speeches by JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar. The suspect allegedly operated a Telegram group used to share such content and was an active member of the Pakistan-backed Telegram channel ‘IBN-e-Qasim’.

Additionally, the ATS is investigating an Instagram post by the accused that commented on security lapses during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai. Investigators are also examining potential contact between the suspect and Pakistani intelligence operatives.
