Mumbai Metro 4 first driverless trainset scheduled for December delivery
The first driverless-ready Metropolis trainset for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A has completed production at the Sri City manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh. The six-car train is expected to arrive in Mumbai in December 2026 for trial runs and system integration testing.
The project is a joint contract between Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Alstom to supply 39 trainsets for the 35.3 km Green Line corridor, which will connect Wadala and Kasarvadavali across 32 stations. The fleet utilizes Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, designed to support fully automated operations with a targeted headway of 90 seconds between services.
While the trains have a maximum design speed of 90 km/h, they will operate at a maximum speed of 80 km/h. The manufacturing process involved components from Bengaluru, Savli, and Coimbatore, with final assembly completed in Sri City. Commercial revenue service for the corridor is expected to begin around July 2027.
