Mumbai and Greater Maharashtra Flooded as Monsoon Deluge Triggers Red Alerts, School Closures and Fatalities

Heavy monsoon rains battered Mumbai and surrounding districts on July 5‑6 2026, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar and an Orange Alert for the Konkan region. Rainfall of 200‑260 mm fell in 12 hours, swelling tides up to 4.19 m and causing widespread waterlogging in low‑lying areas such as Kurla, LTT, Mahim, Turbhe and Thane.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar, and the Pune district administration did the same. Mumbai University cancelled all exams scheduled for July 6. Transport was heavily disrupted: local trains suffered delays, several rail sections were flooded, the Pune‑Mumbai Expressway and the old highway were shut after a landslide near Lohagad Fort trapped a family, flights were diverted or cancelled, and major road arteries were inundated.

At least ten people died in rain‑related incidents, including tree‑related injuries, a drowning in a flood‑covered manhole and a landslide fatality. Rescue teams from the NDRF and SDRF were deployed, de‑watering pumps and emergency crews were sent to critical points, and authorities warned residents to stay indoors unless essential.
