Mumbai Police detain 140 people during unauthorized protests
Mumbai Police detained approximately 140 individuals during two separate unauthorized gatherings at Shivaji Park and Chaityabhoomi in Dadar.
One group, consisting of 20 to 25 people, held an unsanctioned candlelight march at Chaityabhoomi organized by the Progressive Students Union. The vigil was held to demand justice for Sahil Wakode, a second-year IIT Bombay student who died by suicide on September 18. Wakode’s family has alleged he faced caste-based harassment and mental torture at the institute, naming Professor Suryanarayana Doolla in a complaint. The Mumbai Crime Branch is currently investigating these allegations.
At Shivaji Park, police detained approximately 120 individuals participating in an unauthorized ‘Adivasi Gen Z’ protest. Authorities stated the detentions were necessary because the gatherings lacked required permissions. The process of releasing the detainees is currently underway.
