Mumbai Port crane fire injures two operators during cargo unloading

A crane caught fire during cargo unloading operations at the BPS Terminal in Mumbai Port on Sunday evening. The accident occurred while two cranes owned by the private company Barkat were working together to unload approximately 140 tons of cargo from the vessel ‘Vienna’, which flew the flag of Barbados.

Preliminary investigations suggest a technical issue involving an imbalance in a lifting strap caused the weight to shift suddenly to one crane. This sudden shift caused the second crane to lose its stability, resulting in its telescopic boom striking the ship. The collision triggered the fire.

Two crane operators, Ranjeet Singh and Nishant Singh, sustained injuries during the incident. Mumbai Port fire services responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the flames to prevent further spread. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
