Mumbai protests lead to mass detentions and political confrontations
Mumbai experienced significant political unrest on October 10 and 11, 2026, as police detained approximately 600 protesters during demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protests, held at locations including August Kranti Maidan and Shivaji Park, were organized in response to electoral roll controversies.
The situation escalated into direct confrontations between political leaders and law enforcement. Aaditya Thackeray, leader of Yuva Sena, and Amit Thackeray joined protesters near Sena Bhavan, where Aaditya Thackeray physically blocked a police van and climbed onto its roof to demand the release of detained activists. He vowed that daily street protests would continue until all demonstrators are freed.
In separate civic news, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced new measures to combat air pollution. Starting October 11, vehicles transporting construction waste without active tracking devices will face fines of ₹25,000. Additionally, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hosted Akie Abe in Mumbai to discuss strengthening bilateral ties between India and Japan.
