Mumbai Water Management: Reservoirs Overflow Yet 10% Cut Remains, Flood Preparedness Questioned

Mumbai’s drinking‑water reservoirs have risen to about 70% of capacity, with four of the seven lakes already overflowing after several weeks of heavy monsoon rain. Despite this recovery, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has kept a 10% water supply cut in place, saying it needs to reach full capacity across all reservoirs by the end of September and to safeguard year‑round supply.

The city’s experience of the catastrophic 26 July 2005 floods – which saw more than 500 deaths and massive disruption – remains a reference point. Although drainage infrastructure and forecasting have improved, recent rains still cause water‑logging in low‑lying areas, prompting officials and experts to question whether Mumbai is truly ready for another extreme deluge.
