Mundamveli apartment complex faces demolition due to construction defects
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan has announced that the Mundamveli apartment complex, built under the LIFE Mission housing scheme, may need to be demolished due to severe construction defects.
The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) constructed the complex in 2024 to rehabilitate low-income families relocated from the P&T Colony. However, residents have reported significant structural and sanitation issues, including leaking roofs, cracked walls, falling plaster, and sewage overflowing from septic tanks. Reports indicate that wastewater from upper-floor toilets seeps into the floors below.
An assessment suggested that the cost of repairing the defective building would exceed the cost of constructing a new one. In response to the situation, Local Self-Government Minister KM Shaji stated that a Vigilance probe will be recommended to investigate construction lapses. The CPI(M) has expressed support for the affected residents and called for a formal investigation into the matter.
