Mundo a Sorrir honored for oral health promotion in São Tomé and Príncipe
The government of São Tomé and Príncipe has awarded a merit diploma to the Portuguese NGO Mundo a Sorrir for its contributions to oral health in the archipelago. The distinction was presented by Health Minister Celso Matos, who praised the organization for its professional partnership and transformative impact on the National Health System.
Minister Matos noted that while oral health services are highly sought after by the population, citizens often seek help only during acute, painful situations. He emphasized that Mundo a Sorrir’s focus on literacy, prevention, and awareness helps address these issues before they become severe.
Since 2013, the Porto-based organization has sent over 94 volunteers to the country. Its efforts have reached more than 47,000 beneficiaries through over 1,600 health promotion sessions, 47,633 oral screenings, 10,422 dental treatments, and the distribution of more than 68,000 toothbrushes and toothpastes.
