Munich advances tramway heritage and infrastructure projects

Munich is advancing both its historical tramway heritage and its modern transit infrastructure. The legendary Heidelberg motor car 721, a ‘Kriegsstraßenbahnwagen’ dating from 1944, completed its first outing in the city after a 13-year hiatus. This restoration is part of preparations for a major jubilee parade on October 17 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Munich tramway. Following the parade, several restored museum vehicles are expected to operate on a special anniversary line through the city center.

In terms of infrastructure development, Stadtwerke München (SWM) has received the necessary planning approval for the entire West Tangent tram line. The approval for the second construction phase, which runs from Waldfriedhof to Aidenbachstraße, completes the permits for the full route from Romanplatz to Aidenbachstraße. The project aims to connect five districts in western Munich, linking various U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, and bus lines. Preparatory construction measures are scheduled to begin in October 2026, with track and road construction expected to start in July 2027.
