Munich Airport Boosts Baggage Operations Using Celonis Digital Twin

Munich Airport, Germany's second‑largest hub, has expanded its partnership with process‑intelligence firm Celonis to create a near‑real‑time digital twin of its baggage‑handling workflow. The Celonis Context Model aggregates data from check‑in, storage, ground‑crew movements and system handoffs, providing predictive capacity management, real‑time monitoring of each bag’s journey and automatic alerts when thresholds are exceeded. The initiative aims to anticipate bottlenecks, accelerate decision‑making and reduce delays for the tens of millions of passengers the airport serves each year.

Celonis executives highlighted the strategic impact, with Florian Schewior, Managing Director DACH, stating the airport is “consolidating its position among Europe’s top hubs.” Dr. Jan‑Henrik Andersson, Chief Commercial Officer of Munich Airport, added that Celonis “provides the context needed to understand in real time how our airport works,” enabling faster, data‑driven operational improvements.
