Munich Airport Tops German Safety Ranking in 2026 VC Check
The pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) has named Munich Airport the safest airport in Germany for 2026. The airport reclaimed the top spot thanks to permanently illuminated stopbars at runway and taxiway approaches, which the union says act as the final safety barrier before an active runway. Many German airports still limit stopbar operation because of cost, while Zurich and Geneva already run them 24 hours a day.
VC’s annual airport‑safety check evaluates runway‑incursion prevention, technical equipment and cooperation with pilot groups. Leipzig/Halle fell to second place, and other German airports such as Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Lübeck improved modestly. The union emphasizes that all German airports meet basic safety standards, but continuous stopbar use could further reduce the risk of serious incidents. A major accident at Tokyo‑Haneda in early 2024, where defective stopbars contributed to a crash that killed five people, is cited as a warning example.
The ranking also includes Swiss airports for the first time; Zurich and Geneva score highly because of their round‑the‑clock stopbars.
