Munich Airport reports traffic decline despite Thai Airways expansion
Munich Airport reported a decline in activity during the first half of 2026. According to data from the Bavarian State Office for Statistics, flight movements fell by 8.2 percent to 144,234, while passenger numbers decreased by 4.2 percent to 18.9 million. This downturn contrasts with regional Bavarian airports, such as Nuremberg and Memmingen, which saw passenger growth driven by low-cost carrier models.
In a move to bolster international connectivity, Thai Airways has announced an expansion of its service from Munich to Bangkok starting in December 2026. The airline will increase its frequency to ten weekly non-stop flights, adding three new departures on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. These additional flights will utilize Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
