Munich begins drilling second S-Bahn main line rescue tunnel

The tunnel boring machine 'Donna Maria' has begun work in western Munich to construct the first exploration and rescue tunnel for the city's second S-Bahn main line. The project aims to relieve the heavily used first main line by creating a new route between Laim and Ostbahnhof.

The machine, which is 178 meters long and weighs 700 tons, will operate at depths of up to 40 meters. It is expected to drill a three-kilometer route from the Donnersbergerbrücke area to Marienhof over the course of approximately one year, averaging a progress of eight meters per day.

During the process, an estimated 150,000 tons of earth and rock will be excavated and distributed to twenty different landfills via truck and rail. Up to eight people will work directly on board the machine. The completed tunnel will serve as a rescue and exploration route between the two future S-Bahn traffic tunnels.
