Munich breweries reject non-alcoholic Wiesnbier concept

Brewery representatives from the Association of Munich Breweries have expressed skepticism regarding the introduction of a dedicated non-alcoholic version of Wiesnbier, the special beer brewed specifically for Oktoberfest.

Martin Leibhard, a board member of the association, described the concept as a “logical contradiction,” noting that Wiesnbier is traditionally defined by a higher original gravity and higher alcohol content compared to standard lagers or export beers. While technical methods exist to remove alcohol from high-gravity beer, Leibhard suggested this could negatively impact the flavor profile and would involve significant production effort.

Although the consumption of non-alcoholic beverages is increasing at the festival, breweries currently meet this demand through their standard product ranges. Munich Mayor Dominik Krause noted that while the idea is “nice,” the decision rests entirely with the breweries.
