Munich launches first autonomous electric bus test operations

The Munich Transport Company (MVG) is initiating test operations for its first autonomous electric bus. Starting November 17, residents can experience unscheduled test rides on the MVG Line 178.

The vehicle was developed through a collaboration between MAN Truck & Bus, Stadtwerke München (SWM), and MVG. The autonomous driving system is provided by technology partner ADASTEC. While the bus is capable of autonomous movement, a trained safety driver remains behind the wheel to intervene in emergencies.

This initiative is part of the MINGA project, which aims to test various autonomous mobility applications under real-world urban conditions in Munich. The test phase is scheduled to run until June 2027. The project has already seen significant public interest, with over 2,000 pre-registrations for rides. Future plans for the city include the introduction of autonomous taxis.
