Munich mandates redesign of traditional Oktoberfest figures
The City of Munich has mandated changes to traditional papier-mâché figures at the Teufelsrad attraction for the 2026 Oktoberfest. Following instructions from the city’s gender equality office, the operator, Elisabeth Polaczy, has modified the figures to address concerns regarding immodest clothing, such as deep necklines and short skirts.
Polaczy has implemented the changes at her own expense, including adding blouses, longer undergarments, and shoes to the figures. While complying to secure her permit, she expressed frustration over being accused of sexism and the perceived interference in long-standing traditions.
The directive has sparked political debate within the Munich City Council. Members of the CSU have criticized the move, labeling the administration’s actions as a “morality police” and arguing that such decisions regarding the cultural identity of Oktoberfest should require council approval rather than being handled unilaterally by administrative offices.
