Afghan attacker Farhad N. sentenced to life for Munich Verdi demo car‑ramming
In February 2025 a 25‑year‑old Afghan man, identified only as Farhad N., drove a Mini Cooper into the rear of a Verdi trade‑union march of about 1,400 people in Munich. The impact killed a 37‑year‑old woman and her two‑year‑old daughter and injured dozens of others, many of whom continue to suffer physical or psychological effects.
The Oberlandesgericht München delivered its verdict on 6 August 2026. The court found Farhad N. guilty of two counts of murder, 23 counts of attempted murder and 22 counts of bodily harm (19 serious) and imposed a life‑long prison term with a finding of special severity of guilt, meaning early release after 15 years is highly unlikely. Prosecutors described the attack as religiously motivated, though they said he was not part of an organised jihadist network. The defence asked for a 15‑year sentence and placement in a psychiatric facility, citing signs of hebephrenic schizophrenia. Presiding judge Michael Höhne called the scene “a field of debris” and quoted witnesses that victims were “flung like bowling pins.”
