Munich prepares for massive resource needs and fraud risks at Oktoberfest

As preparations for the 191st Oktoberfest in Munich reach completion, officials have highlighted the massive scale of resources required for the event. Munich City Utilities (SWM) reports that the festival will consume approximately three million kilowatt-hours of electricity over its 16-day duration, a demand comparable to the annual needs of 1,200 households or the peak power requirements of a small town of 21,000 residents. Additionally, the event requires 180,000 cubic meters of natural gas for cooking and hot water, and roughly 100 million liters of drinking water.

To manage costs, the city utilizes 1,300 individual meters to ensure precise billing for the 750 different consumers on-site. While the city covers the costs for public lighting and pathways, these expenses are refinanced through stall fees and tax revenues rather than local taxpayer funds. The total economic value of the festival is estimated to be nearly 1.6 billion euros.

In conjunction with these logistical preparations, authorities and festival hosts are issuing warnings regarding fraudulent activities. Scammers are targeting visitors with suspicious online offers for table reservations. Officials note that while table reservations are generally free and entry to tents is also free, third-party providers often charge exorbitant, four-digit sums. Legal disputes have previously arisen when external agencies sold reservations that were non-transferable under the tents' terms and conditions, leaving customers without seating despite high payments.
