Munich prosecutors identify suspect in 1970 Jewish nursing home arson
The Munich Public Prosecutor's Office has identified a suspect in a 1970 arson attack on a Jewish community center and nursing home that killed seven people. The investigation, reopened in early 2025 following a tip from a new witness, points to a 25-year-old right-wing extremist, identified as Bernd V., as the sole perpetrator.
Evidence suggests the suspect, who was known for his antisemitic views and fascination with Hitler, set fire to the building's wooden staircase using a gasoline mixture. Witnesses reported him making threats to ‘burn the Jews’ shortly before the blaze. The victims were Holocaust survivors, making the event one of the most severe antisemitic attacks in post-war German history.
Because the suspect died in 2020, legal proceedings cannot be completed, and the principle of posthumous innocence applies. Authorities stated they found no evidence of other accomplices, effectively closing the investigation into the identities of those responsible.
