Munich to launch digital rent monitor to combat high prices

The city of Munich is planning to introduce a digital ‘rent monitor’ to combat excessively high rental prices. The tool is designed to scan all publicly available online housing advertisements and compare the listed features of an apartment with the data from the current local rent index.

If the system identifies suspiciously high rents, the city administration intends to contact the landlords to inform them of legal requirements. Mayor Dominik Krause stated that the city aims to use every available means to slow the price spiral and protect residents from overcharged rents. He noted that landlords often adopt prices suggested by internet portals that may be illegally high without realizing it.

Due to current legal frameworks, the city administration cannot directly intervene in private contracts or issue fines for illegal rent increases. Instead, the initiative focuses on providing information and guidance to both landlords and prospective tenants.
