Munich uses AI crowd control for Oktoberfest
Munich is implementing new crowd control measures for the upcoming Oktoberfest weekend, specifically targeting the traditionally busy “Italian weekend” on 26 and 27 September 2026.
To prevent the extreme overcrowding experienced in 2025, which led to temporary closures of the Theresienwiese due to dangerous density, organizers are utilizing a network of surveillance cameras and AI-based crowd-tracking software. These tools are intended to monitor visitor flows and manage capacity more effectively.
The surge in visitors during this period is largely attributed to a high influx of guests from northern Italy traveling via the Brenner Pass for regional holidays and long weekends.
