Munich’s Old Südfriedhof Plagued by Drug Use, Homeless Camps and Poor Maintenance

Members of Munich’s city council have raised concerns over deteriorating conditions at the historic Alte Südfriedhof. Reports describe visible drug consumption, public urination beside graves, litter, and the presence of tents and mattress piles used as makeshift camps.

Police confirm that the cemetery, a resting place for notable figures such as Joseph von Fraunhofer, Leo von Klenze and Wilhelm von Kaulbach, has become a frequent spot for drug‑scene activity, especially in summer months and after heightened police operations near Sendlinger Tor. While the municipal administration is aware of the situation, officials say little substantive action has been taken to remedy the neglect.
