Municipal and Motagua eye Copa Centroamericana quarterfinals

In the 2026 Copa Centroamericana, Guatemalan club Municipal remains in a strong position to advance to the quarterfinals. Following a rest week, Municipal holds second place in Group D with four points, earned from a draw against Cartaginés and a 1-0 victory over Verdes in Belize. The team can secure qualification with two wins in their remaining group stage matches, which include a game against FAS in El Salvador on August 19 and a final match against Motagua on August 25.

In the same group, Honduran side Motagua drew 1-1 at home against Costa Rican club Cartaginés. After falling behind to a goal by José González in the 16th minute, Motagua equalized via an own goal by Diego Mesén. Motagua currently leads Group D with seven points. Motagua coach Javier López expressed confidence in his team's advancement, stating that based on their performance and the number of scoring opportunities created, it is “impossible” for the club not to qualify for the next phase.
