Municipal authorities in Brazil crack down on noise disturbances

Municipal authorities in Carapicuíba and Santo André have launched operations to combat noise pollution and disturbances of the peace.

In Carapicuíba, a joint operation involving the Municipal Civil Guard and the Secretariat of Revenues inspected several neighborhoods, including Planalto, Santa Terezinha, and the city center. The inspection resulted in several establishments being fined and closed due to documentation irregularities and noise complaints. Local officials stated that inspections will intensify during long weekends to ensure commercial activities do not compromise residents' right to tranquility.

In Santo André, the ‘Operação Sono Tranquilo’ (Quiet Sleep Operation) conducted by Semasa and the Municipal Civil Guard resulted in four fines and 13 warnings across 13 different neighborhoods. The operation targeted establishments emitting noise above legal limits. Authorities noted that while initial actions involve guidance and warnings, repeat offenders face fines, equipment seizure, and suspension of activities.
