Municipal elections underway in Brandon and El Paso

Municipal elections are underway in Brandon, Canada, and El Paso, United States, with candidates addressing local infrastructure and fiscal policies.

In Brandon, incumbent Ward 8 councillor Jason Splett is facing challenges from Dhara Patel and Ketan Patel. Splett, whose residence was moved outside the ward boundaries following a 2022 adjustment, has emphasized the city’s improved financial position and asset management. He noted that water drainage remains a primary concern for residents in the ward.

In El Paso, five candidates are competing for the District 8 City Council seat. Incumbent Chris Canales is running against newcomers Matthew Guzman, Arturo Alluin, Laura Ochoa-Todd, and Johnny J. Gonzalez. Key campaign issues include the proposed $207 million Downtown deck plaza and the city’s tax abatement agreement with Meta. While the Meta data center is expected to be a major taxpayer, candidates and residents have debated the risks regarding pollution and energy sources.
