Municipal governments sworn in across Canadian cities

New municipal leadership has officially commenced duties in Yellowknife and Winnipeg following recent elections.

In Yellowknife, Mayor Melissa Syer and eight councillors were sworn into office at city hall. The ceremony, overseen by City Manager Stephen Van Dine and NWT Supreme Court Justice Shannon Smallwood, marks the beginning of a term lasting from November 2, 2026, to November 4, 2030. Outgoing mayor Ben Hendriksen advised the new council to represent all residents regardless of their voting status or housing situation.

In Winnipeg, Mayor Scott Gillingham has appointed five councillors to the Executive Policy Committee (EPC). The group includes veteran councillors Jeff Browaty, Evan Duncan, and Vivian Santos, alongside newcomers Lara Meseman and Sara MacArthur. Browaty will serve as deputy mayor, while Santos has been named acting deputy mayor. Gillingham stated the committee aims to balance experienced perspectives with fresh ideas.
