Municipal Hospital in Gliwice launches free diabetes screenings for youth

The Municipal Hospital in Gliwice has launched the second round of free type 1 diabetes screening for children and adolescents as part of the national EDENT1FI project. The initiative, conducted in cooperation with the Silesian Medical University in Katowice, aims to identify risks of type 1 diabetes at an early stage by testing for specific autoantibodies (GADA, IA2A, ZnT8) that indicate pancreatic inflammation.

These antibodies can often be detected years before full-blown symptoms appear, allowing for early intervention and the prevention of life-threatening complications. The screenings are available to children and youth aged 2 to 17, and residency in Gliwice is not required.

Testing involves a quick finger-prick blood sample and does not require fasting. The second round of testing begins on Monday, September 21, at the Municipal Hospital located at ul. Zygmunta Starego 20. No prior registration is necessary.
