Balkan regional updates: Tourism, safety, and infrastructure

Various regional developments across the Balkans highlight seasonal challenges in tourism, safety, and infrastructure.

In Montenegro, the Budva Misdemeanor Court reported a high volume of cases during the peak tourist season, collecting over 200,000 euros in fines for offenses such as driving under the influence and speeding. Simultaneously, the police force has deployed drones and full capacity to combat active wildfires caused by extreme heat and drought.

Croatia's maritime sector shows growth in international cruise tourism, with a 13.6% increase in passengers during the first half of 2026. However, overall passenger numbers in Croatian sea ports saw a slight decline of 0.9% compared to the previous year.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Sarajevo Film Festival has prompted significant traffic restrictions and police security measures across multiple municipalities. Meanwhile, road construction and maintenance continue to cause diversions on major highways and regional roads throughout the country.
