Portugal celebrates International Youth Day with cultural access and regional development talks

To mark International Youth Day on August 12, various cultural and civic initiatives are taking place across Portugal.

President António José Seguro visited Covilhã to discuss the potential of Portugal's interior regions. He emphasized the need for strategic investment and public support to empower young people, arguing that the interior is a “potential of opportunities” rather than a burden. He advocated for a balance between coastal competitiveness and the environmental quality of inland areas to prevent forced migration due to economic necessity.

In celebration of the day, Museus e Monumentos de Portugal (MMP) is offering free entry to national museums and monuments for youth aged 12 to 29. Participating sites include the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, and the Convent of Christ, though some locations remain closed for renovation.

Local municipalities are also hosting events. Vila Real de Santo António is organizing sports activities, the inauguration of a calisthenics park, and a concert by the artist MAR. Sines is hosting a diverse program of sports and music, while Guimarães is opening its historic landmarks, such as the Castle of Guimarães, to young visitors for free.
