Municipalities explore greyfield revitalization strategies

A recent online event titled ‘From Department Store to Library: How Municipalities Successfully Revitalize Greyfields’ explored strategies for repurposing underutilized or vacant commercial spaces. Organized in collaboration with the retailer Lidl, the session focused on using ‘greyfields’ to promote sustainable urban development, strengthen local supply chains, and reduce land consumption.

Bernd Düsterdiek of the German Association of Cities and Municipalities (DStGB) emphasized the importance of activating sealed surfaces to prevent additional land consumption. Stephan Zwierzynski of Lidl Immobilien Dienstleistung GmbH highlighted how changing consumer behavior and evolving requirements for retail locations necessitate the strategic redevelopment of existing real estate to secure local supply.
