Municipalities face scrutiny over towing contracts and billing

Municipalities in the United States are facing scrutiny over towing service contracts and billing practices. In Honolulu, the City Council approved a $125,050 payment plan to compensate drivers who were allegedly overcharged by All Island Wreckers, Inc. The company reportedly charged as much as $900 for 15-minute increments, totaling $3,600 per hour. Despite the city labeling the practice an “egregious breach” of contract, the company denied wrongdoing, leaving taxpayers to cover the refund costs.

In National City, officials are preparing to award a municipal towing contract to Cortes Towing Enterprises. The company was recently suspended by the city of San Diego after failing to remit over $279,000 in overdue impound fees. While National City executives noted they were aware of the arrears, they stated the suspension was lifted after the company resolved the debt, characterizing the issue as an administrative error.
