Municipalities implement LED lighting upgrades to improve efficiency
In Camargo, Mexico, the Municipal Services Directorate has replaced old yellow lighting fixtures with LED technology in Plaza de la Novena. Omar Solís, head of the department, stated the upgrade aims to enhance visibility, improve the public space's image, and reduce electricity consumption. Most other municipal parks and gardens have already transitioned to LED technology.
In Portland, Oregon, a large-scale energy efficiency project involving the replacement of approximately 45,000 to 50,000 sodium streetlights with LED luminaires has yielded significant results. Following the transition period between 2014 and 2019, the city reports that the new LED lights consume 50% less energy than the previous high-pressure sodium lamps. This initiative is projected to save the city approximately $1.5 million annually in electricity and maintenance costs.
