Municipalities in Argentina and Chile remove obsolete urban cabling

Municipalities in Argentina and Chile are implementing initiatives to remove obsolete telecommunications and electrical cabling to improve urban landscapes and public safety.

In Luján, Argentina, local authorities, in coordination with the Electric Cooperative and Telecom, have begun dismantling decommissioned electrical and telephone infrastructure in the city center. The work focuses on the area between Colón and 9 de Julio streets, removing old lighting and unused telephone lines that have remained in place for decades despite being out of service.

In Viña del Mar, Chile, the municipality is executing a plan under the ‘Chao cables’ law and local ordinances to organize aerial space. The telecommunications company GTD has already removed approximately 13,000 linear meters of unused cables. Mayor Macarena Ripamonti stated that the initiative aims to improve the city's image and mitigate risks to residents during severe weather, noting that poorly maintained elements can become hazards during strong winds.
