Municipalities in Argentina face economic challenges and budget cuts
Local governments in Argentina are navigating significant economic difficulties driven by a decline in tax sharing revenues and rising operational costs.
In Villa Ocampo, Mayor Cristian Marega reported that the decrease in national coparticipation funds and increasing costs are complicating municipal administration. Additionally, rising water levels in low-lying areas have disrupted rural road works and infrastructure projects, including those directed toward the port.
In Guaymallén, a 20% drop in municipal income has led the Deliberative Council to approve an austerity ordinance. This measure implements salary cuts for the mayor and high-ranking officials, reducing the mayor's remuneration from 95% to 85% of the Mendoza Governor's salary. Furthermore, salaries for secretaries, directors, and council members will be frozen in nominal terms until the first half of 2027 to ensure fiscal responsibility.
