Municipalities in Catalonia face waste collection issues and recycling successes

The municipalities of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Olèrdola, and Sant Quintí de Mediona are demanding solutions to significant delays in their door-to-door waste collection service. These delays, primarily affecting night shifts, have caused collections to extend into the following afternoon. Local governments have met with the Penedès-Garraf Mancomunitat to address the situation, which the agency attributes to the service provider being in collective bargaining negotiations with workers. Residents are advised to leave bins at their doors until service is completed.

In contrast, several municipalities in the Gironès region have achieved high selective collection rates. Juià, Sant Joan de Mollet, and Llambilles are ranked among the top fifteen in Catalonia for 2025. The eight municipalities in Gironès that utilize the door-to-door system managed by the Comarcal Council achieved an average selective collection rate of 86.7%, significantly higher than the Catalan average of 48.13%.
