Municipalities in Colchane and Puno address public security challenges

In Colchane, Chile, the first Communal Public Security Council was held under the new Municipal Security Law (Law No. 21.802), which went into effect on August 12. The session aimed to define security needs in the border commune and strengthen coordination between municipalities, police, and the Public Ministry. Omar Salazar Méndez, the Seremi of Public Security for Tarapacá, noted that the law provides better tools for coordinated work and strengthens the preventive role of municipalities.

Meanwhile, in Puno, Peru, local officials are reporting significant limitations in public safety. Councilman Efraín Colca Borda warned that broken video surveillance cameras and a shortage of security personnel are hindering crime prevention. Colca Borda has proposed hiring at least 10 new agents to reinforce patrols and has requested the replacement of damaged equipment to improve response times in high-crime sectors.
