Municipalities in Mexico and Argentina face fiscal scrutiny

In Jerez, Mexico, Mayor Rodrigo Ureño Bañuelos presented his second government report, highlighting efforts to stabilize municipal finances. A key focus was the reduction of debt owed to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). The debt, which previously stood at 58 million pesos, has been reduced to 24 million pesos, with over 13 million pesos already paid. This financial restructuring aims to secure benefits for more than 600 municipal employees and improve the administration's solvency.

In Argentina, Mayor María José Gentile provided a management balance sheet covering rural roads, education, and infrastructure. However, the Provincial Court of Accounts issued observations regarding the 2025 accountability report. The audit identified several issues, including a bank overdraft, debt recognition to five electric cooperatives totaling approximately 498.6 million pesos, and a lack of documentation regarding the road network tax and the road machinery investment fund. The local Deliberative Council disapproved the accounts via Resolution 101/2026, noting a computable deficit of approximately 2.4 billion pesos.
