Municipalities in Mexico and Guatemala impose fines for water waste

Local authorities in Mexico and Guatemala are implementing strict penalties to combat water waste amid ongoing drought conditions.

In Tamaulipas, Mexico, Raúl Quiroga Álvarez, Secretary of Hydraulic Resources for Social Development, warned that four municipalities have been identified as having water consumption levels significantly higher than normal. The state government is prepared to enforce the State Water Law, which allows for fines of up to 51,870 pesos (approximately 500 UMAs) for wasteful practices. Officials noted that the excess may stem from distribution network issues or a lack of conservation culture, and they have requested that local water operators report on the specific sanctions applied to curb usage.

In Ciudad Vieja, Guatemala, the municipal government has issued fines of 7,000 quetzales to residents following reports of water misuse during recent local festivities. The municipality conducted supervised inspections and used photographic and video evidence to identify individuals who wasted potable water. Local officials justified the heavy sanctions as a necessary response to the drought currently affecting the country.
