Municipalities in Spain and Mexico advance local health and wellness initiatives

Municipal leaders in Spain and Mexico are advancing local health initiatives focused on mental wellness and aging.

In Spain, the Spanish Network of Healthy Cities (RECS) held its biennial meeting and General Assembly in Avilés. The forum addressed active aging and combating loneliness, particularly in depopulated areas. Discussions included projects from cities such as Bilbao and Cartagena, and the presentation of a technical guide for implementing physical exercise programs through municipal community services. The RECS currently includes 562 local entities following World Health Organization guidelines.

In Mexico, the Querétaro Network of Municipalities for Health met in El Marqués to coordinate strategies for mental health care, suicide prevention, and the fight against diseases like dengue. Local and state authorities emphasized the role of municipalities in promoting healthy habits and creating supportive environments for families. The meeting also reviewed progress on certifying municipalities as health promoters and fostering community physical activity.
