Munster Rugby appoints Avan Lee as interim CEO

Munster Rugby has appointed Avan Lee as its interim Chief Executive Officer, effective toward the end of October. Lee, a New Zealand rugby executive, previously served as the CEO of the Hurricanes Super Rugby franchise for a decade, leading them through a title win in 2016.

Lee’s appointment follows the confirmed departure of outgoing CEO Ian Flanagan at the end of October. The leadership change occurs amid an ongoing independent governance review and recent public criticism regarding the province’s management.

Munster Rugby Chair Ger Malone stated that Lee impressed the board with his rugby expertise and understanding of the challenges facing professional sports organizations. The appointment was also supported by the IRFU.
