Mural of Slavko Aleksić painted in East New Sarajevo

A mural depicting Slavko Aleksić has been painted on a building in East New Sarajevo, near Gavrila Principa Park. The artwork includes inscriptions glorifying aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina and features the name “Vojska Republike Srpske” (Army of Republika Srpska) alongside the quote: “The homeland is education, honor and courage.”

Aleksić was a commander of the “Novo Sarajevo Chetnik Detachment” of the Army of Republika Srpska during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is widely associated with the siege of Sarajevo and the terror inflicted upon civilian populations in areas such as Grbavica. While he was never convicted of war crimes, he was sentenced in 2022 by a Bosnia and Herzegovina court to five months in prison for inciting national, racial, and religious hatred during a 2019 gathering of the Ravnoorski movement in Višegrad; this sentence was later commuted to a fine of approximately 7,670 euros.

Aleksić, who passed away in December 2025, was a founding member of the Chetnik movement in Sarajevo and a member of Vojislav Šešelj’s Serbian Radical Party. His name has also been linked to the “Sarajevo Safari” investigations, involving allegations regarding the targeting of civilians during the siege.
