Murano glass history and the Fucina degli Angeli exhibition

The Fucina degli Angeli, founded in Venice in 1955 by Egidio Costantini, represents a significant intersection between Murano glassmaking and modern international art. Following a suggestion by Jean Cocteau, the project aimed to bridge the gap between the technical skills of master glassmakers and the creative visions of renowned painters and sculptors.

Throughout the mid-twentieth century, the initiative facilitated collaborations with major artists including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Lucio Fontana, and Fernand Léger. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection played a crucial role in supporting the Fucina, helping to connect these glass works with international exhibition circuits.

To commemorate this history, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection will host an exhibition from November 14, 2026, to March 29, 2027. Curated by Cristina Beltrami, the exhibition will feature works, drawings, and documents that reconstruct the complex relationship between artists, collectors, and glass furnaces.
