Murat Kurum addresses UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia

Murat Kurum, Turkey's Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and President of COP31, delivered a video message to the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) held in Mongolia.

Kurum emphasized that climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation are interconnected threats. He highlighted critical environmental data, noting that up to 40 percent of the world's land is degraded and over one million species face extinction. He called for more rapid and decisive action, stating, “We want action, not words.”

Reflecting on Turkey's role, Kurum noted that the Ankara Initiative, launched following Turkey's hosting of COP12 in 2015, has supported over 100 countries in meeting their land degradation targets. He also highlighted Turkey's signing of the Rio Synergy Protocol to enhance cooperation between the Rio Conventions.

The COP31 presidency aims to integrate political leadership, multilateral negotiations, and implementation. Key priorities include clean energy transition, zero waste, circular economy, climate-resilient cities, food security, sustainable agriculture, and green industrialization. Additionally, the COP31 agenda includes the Climate Implementation Bridge to expedite the delivery of climate finance to the field.
