COP31 President Murat Kurum launches BRIDGE initiative and 2035 electrification targets
During New York Climate Week, COP31 President and Turkish Minister Murat Kurum announced several key initiatives to advance global climate action. A primary focus was the launch of the Climate Implementation Bridge (BRIDGE) initiative, which identifies Ethiopia, Fiji, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as its first group of pilot countries. BRIDGE is designed to act as a facilitating mechanism to connect national climate goals and investment programs with available international technical and financial support.
Additionally, the Sustainable Urban Resilience Financing Activity (SURFF) was introduced to bridge the gap between climate goals and implementation capacity for cities. This initiative is a collaboration involving UNDRR, UN-Habitat, ILBANK, and UCLG. In a related development, Konya Metropolitan Municipality signed a protocol with UN-HABITAT to implement the Climate-Sensitive Resilient Cities Program.
On the energy front, Minister Kurum set a global target to increase electrification to 35 percent by 2035. He noted that combined with waste reduction and a 25 percent decrease in building energy intensity, this could reduce global emissions by 8 to 10 gigatons. Furthermore, Emine Erdoğan highlighted the Zero Waste movement's role in the energy transition, noting Turkey's goal to reach 120,000 megawatts of wind and solar capacity by 2035.
