Giresun authorities investigate unconfirmed helicopter crash report

Authorities in Giresun are investigating reports of a helicopter crash in the Piraziz district near Deregözü village. Following a report received around 13:00 on Saturday, August 22, 2026, emergency teams including AFAD, gendarmerie, police, and fire departments were dispatched to the steep, forested area.

As of the latest updates, Giresun Governor Mustafa Koç stated that no traces, wreckage, or signs of an aircraft have been found. Investigations with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and other aviation authorities confirmed there were no officially registered or permitted flights in the area at the time.

Local officials, including Piraziz Mayor Mahmut Esat Ayyıldız, suggested the report might be a false alarm. He noted that a fault in a high-voltage power line occurring around the same time may have caused a loud noise and smoke, which residents could have mistaken for a crash. Search and scanning operations continue to confirm the situation.
