Murata Manufacturing begins mass production of world’s smallest three-terminal MLCCs
Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has commenced mass production of its LLD series, which features the world’s smallest three-terminal low-equivalent series inductance (ESL) multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Measuring 0.6 x 0.3 mm (0201-inch size), these components reduce the required mounting area by approximately 64% compared to the company’s previous smallest 0402-inch size models.
The three-terminal design provides shorter current paths than conventional two-terminal capacitors, which helps minimize voltage fluctuations and maintain a stable power supply to high-performance integrated circuits (ICs). This technology is specifically intended to support the increasing power demands and high-frequency operations of compact electronic devices, such as smartphones and wearables, where PCB space is highly constrained.
Murata achieved this miniaturization by optimizing electrode design and advancing manufacturing processes to manage the complex internal and external electrode structures required for three-terminal types. The series includes models with different voltage ratings, such as 4 Vdc and 2.5 Vdc, to accommodate various operating environments and heat considerations in mobile electronics.
